MORTEX® moves into the Belgian Pavilion at Expo 2025

The Osaka World Expo opened its doors on 13 April for six months of discovery based on the theme: ‘Designing tomorrow’s society, envisioning our life tomorrow’. A powerful symbol of this edition, an impressive circular wooden structure with a circumference of 2 km and a height of 20 m – the ‘Great Ring’ – welcomes visitors to the heart of the artificial island of Yumeshima. No fewer than 158 national pavilions are represented there.

Among them, the Belgian Pavilion stands out for its bold and symbolic architecture, inspired by Japanese Kintsugi, the art of repairing broken objects with gold. A strong metaphor that illustrates the theme chosen by Belgium: Human Regeneration.

In this setting, 150 m² of interior floors and 1,000 m² of exterior spaces have been created with MORTEX® mineral coating.

The work was skilfully carried out by:

  • Mr Nishi, from the Japanese company Hand, for the Chocolate area of the Belgian Pavilion
  • Mr Nagahata, from the company Ribre, for the external surfaces

A Belgian and natural product as technical as it is aesthetic

Developed and offered in 1991 by the family business BEAL International, based in Fernelmont in the Namur region, MORTEX® is a decorative mineral coating based on lime. Renowned for its strength, watertightness and ease of application, this micro-mortar can be used to create continuous, seamless surfaces with a polished concrete appearance, indoors and outdoors, on all substrates. Its texture is reminiscent of stone and has a natural, warm and sensual feel – a unique aesthetic signature that sets the MORTEX® system apart from other solutions on the market.

Made in Belgium, MORTEX® is composed of 95% ingredients of natural origin, all sourced in Europe. Its formula is neutral and can be pigmented directly on site, which allows for more environmentally friendly transport and limits waste.
